TPMS Sensor

TPMS Sensor

What is TPMS?

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors have become an essential safety feature in modern vehicles, designed to alert drivers when their tyre pressure falls below safe levels. These sophisticated electronic devices continuously monitor the air pressure within each tyre and transmit this information to the vehicle's onboard computer system.

This technology has proven invaluable in preventing accidents caused by under-inflated tyres, which can lead to reduced handling, increased stopping distances, and even catastrophic tyre failure at high speeds.

There are two main types of TPMS sensors currently in use: direct and indirect systems. Direct TPMS sensors are physical devices mounted inside each tyre, typically attached to the valve stem or strapped to the wheel rim. These sensors measure the actual air pressure and temperature within the tyre, transmitting real-time data wirelessly to the vehicle's receiver.

Indirect TPMS, by contrast, doesn't use physical pressure sensors but instead relies on the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS) wheel speed sensors to detect changes in tyre rotation speed, which can indicate under-inflation. Whilst indirect systems are less expensive, direct TPMS sensors provide more accurate and immediate pressure readings, making them the preferred choice for most manufacturers.

The installation and replacement of TPMS sensors require specialised knowledge and equipment, as these delicate electronic components must be handled carefully during tyre fitting and removal. When a tyre is replaced or rotated, our technicians must ensure the TPMS sensor is properly reinstalled and programmed to communicate with the vehicle's system.

Do TPMS Sensors need replacing?

Each sensor contains a small battery with a lifespan typically ranging from five to ten years, after which the entire sensor unit must be replaced. Additionally, TPMS sensors use unique identification codes that must be registered with the vehicle's computer, a process that requires professional diagnostic equipment and expertise.
